Something about Shropshire

Shropshire takes its name from an old spelling of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury comes from the Old English 'Scrobbesbyrig', meaning a 'fortified place in scrubland'.

Agriculture and related food processing remain a vital part of the county's economy. Over a third of the county is given over to grassland, with another third devoted to cereal and horticultural use.

As the former heart of the Marches of Wales, Shropshire contains the remains of numerous border defences, with major castles at Shrewsbury, sited on a defensive loop in the Severn, and Ludlow, and closer to the Welsh border at Bishop's Castle and Clun.

Famous for

At Wroxeter, on the banks of the Severn are the remains of Viroconium, Britain's fourth largest Roman city. Excavations began in 1859 and there are extensive remains to be seen including part of the baths complex, the largest free-standing Roman ruin in Britain.

The Chirk Aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford, was built over the river Ceiriog between 1796 and 1801. It is 21 m tall, 220 m long and has 10 spans. Half in Shropshire and half in Wales it carries the Llangollen Canal and is the start of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
